About Carlton

Carlton Television was the ITV franchise holder for London and the surrounding areas from 9.25am every Monday to 5.15pm every Friday. Launched in 1993, Carlton was one of the biggest changes to the ITV franchise, that saw Thames lose their licence to broadcast, after bidding a smaller amount than Carlton Television.

Originally a facilities company, a change in the way that ITV franchises could be run meant that Carlton could be established as a publisher broadcaster - a format that had worked successfully for Channel 4. Meridian Television, which launched in 1993 was also a publisher broadcaster. Carlton broadcast a wide range of programmes, from drama, to documentaries, game shows and entertainment formats.
